Film screening at the New Bedford Whaling Museum
NEW BEDFORD, MA- “Zeb-Schooner Life,” a film documentary about famed sea captain Zebulon Northrup Tilton and his iconic schooner the Alice S. Wentworth, will be screened for free at the New Bedford Whaling Museum on Thursday, August 27, 2009. The film was written and directed by New Bedford native Gordon Massingham who will be on hand to introduce the film and answer questions after the screening.
Zeb Tilton sailed New England ports for many years in the 1940’s and 50’s, delivering bricks, lumber, cobblestones, and paving oil up and down the coast of New England, using his sailing skills to reduce transport time and to survive brutal storms at sea. This amusing film portrays Zeb’s exploits under sail, his wit and his wisdom. Through historic footage and photographs, “Zeb-Schooner Life” explores the history of schooners, whaling, and local maritime lore.
Based on the book “Zeb, Celebrated Schooner Captain of Martha’s Vineyard,” by Polly Burroughs, “Zeb-Schooner Life,” the film was produced by Detrick Lawrence Productions of Edgartown, which has produced more than 150 films in its 30-year history. It features more than 30 interviews with maritime historians, many of whom knew Tilton or were related to him.
The film was released last year on the Vineyard to enthusiastic reviews and capacity audiences. It has since won a Best of Show from the prestigious Accolade Competition for exceptional achievement in craft and creativity, as well as an Indie Award for ‘standout entertainment and compelling documentary.’
Tickets are available at the door and all seats are FREE. More information can be found on the film’s web site at www.zebtilton.com.
