This site started with my daughter's family tree homework project in 1998. The Project has taken us around the world in search of family. Our generational tree is now 5'x4' and goes back to the 1700s in Maine, and prior to that to Ireland, Wales and Germany. A family tree is a marvelous way to keep your family connected.

San Francisco: Port of Gold
William Martin Camp

An image of the cover of Port of Gold is not available. However, I have this book and it is a well-written history of San Francisco penned by a Berkeley author in 1947. It opens with a list of the Officers of the Society of California Pioneers. Some illustrations are included in the book.

Annals of San Francisco.
The Annals of San Francisco by Frank Soule, John H. Gihon, James Nisbet
Originally published 1855. Many illustrations.

J.H. Coghill, Esq. February 28, 1849 (via Chagres)
Daily Alta California, 1853
DEPARTURES BY THE GOLDEN GATE.--

As usual when the Gate (as she is called in fancy parliance) leaves our harbor, a host of passengers take their departure from our shores, among whom are always to be found many old residents of the State.

In the list for to-morrow, we see the name of J.H. Coghill, Esq., one of our first and most successful merchants. Mr. C. came in the van of the golden emigration, was one of the first party of gold adventurers that ascended the Chagres river in 1849.

He arrived here on the 28th day of February of that year. Since that time he has been actively engaged in business, and has done much towards building up and improving our city. We wish him a pleasant visit and an early return to his adopted home.
