Peregrine

PEREGRINE, Daily Alta California, Thursday Morning, April 10, 1851, Hawaiian Correspondence

I am reseraching the writings of Mark Twain, specifically his Hawaiian writings in Roughing It. I came across the above noted letter on your web site but I can find no information on its author, Peregrine. Do you have any information on this person? I would appreciate any direction you can give me on finding out more about him.

Thank you, M.S.

Editor’s Note:

Hello.

Because this is a one-person project, I do not have much time for research. However, I did find this in a Daily Alta California article from July 19, 1851.

“. . . a lengthy defence of the Sandwich Islands Mission against the charges which were contained in a letter from our esteemed correspondent “Peregrine,” dated Honolulu, March 10, and which appeared in our paper about a month afterward.”

Also found articles in the Daily Alta California from Northern California written by “Peregrine.”

Apparently, “Peregrine,” is a nom de plume . . . perhaps of Mark Twain?

As I get time, I’ll dig and get back to you. This is interesting. If you would like to dig, following are links to resources, including 250 years of newspaper archives (which I find invaluable for this project):

Good luck with your searches and please let me know if you find anything that could be included on the Website.
